BEHIND THE DESIGN: GMK BLACK LOTUS

Black Lotus is a stunning keyset designed by Potatoclack with some collaborative feedback on Geekhack. The vision behind this keyset began in 2016, but it wasn't until 2020 that Black Lotus was able to come to fruition in the form of a groupbuy.

The story behind GMK Black Lotus is quite simple. Potatoclack took inspiration from two popular fantasy/magic medias—Magic: The Gathering and Accel World.

(Base Kit)

Magic: The Gathering is a popular tabletop and digital collectible card game created in 1993. Accel World is a science fantasy novel with similar magic themes laced throughout. Both incorporate mythical creatures and dark magic, which perfectly matches the deep purples and blacks of GMK Black Lotus.

(Novelties Kit)

The novelties for Black Lotus are loosely based on icons from both Magic: The Gathering and Accel World. For example, the Deathtouch is a card in Magic: The Gathering that has the ability to destroy any creature in the game, regardless of its status. Other icons like the joker icon (Yellow Radio) represent characters from Accel World.

(Spacebars Kit)

To compliment the keyset, Potatoclack enlisted the help of OneCreativeMind to design deskmats for Black Lotus. Two variants were created, both representing different components of the keyset.

(Lotus Deskmat)

The first variant, Lotus, obviously represents the flower this keyset is based around, the Black Lotus. In fact, the Black Lotus is actually the single most valuable card in Magic: The Gathering, as it enables you to add mana to any deck.

(Element Deskmat)

The second variant, Elements, represents a few of the key novelties in this set, such as the skull, rain drop, and leaf. These are also cards in Magic: The Gathering.

Black Lotus keyset and deskmat extras go live Friday, April 15th, 2022 at 3PM EST!
